Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that have many health and behavioural benefits for pets.
What is spaying and neutering?
Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures performed to make pets sterile (unable to reproduce). In males, the procedure is called neutering or castration (removal of the testicles). In females, it is referred to as an ovariohysterectomy (removal of the uterus and ovaries).
Why are spaying and neutering strongly recommended?
Spaying and neutering have a number of advantages. First, they help to reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs. In Québec, cat overpopulation is particularly problematic. When cats are spayed or neutered, they can go outside and not worry about unwanted litters of kittens.
Spaying and neutering also have health benefits for cats and dogs. Castration and ovariohysterectomy help to prevent cancers and cysts of the reproductive system.
They also have a positive impact on behaviour. Castrated males are less prone to urine marking and sterilized pets will be less likely to run away or be aggressive.
Are there disadvantages to having pets spayed or neutered?
As with all surgical procedures, there can be complications resulting from the procedure and anesthesia. But rest assured, your pet will be in great hands throughout the procedure, since our veterinary team has extensive training and experience in this area.
Another disadvantage of spaying and neutering is post-surgical weight gain. With a proper diet, however, this issue can be easily managed.
