Weight Management

Help your pet achieve a balanced weight with our weight management program.

Keeping your pet at a healthy weight contributes to a good quality of life and a longer life expectancy and helps reduce the risk of certain diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. Our veterinary team can give you advice to help you properly manage your pet’s weight.

How can I tell if my pet is overweight?

In a pet with a healthy weight, the waist is visible and well defined, and the ribs are easily felt, but not visible. An overweight animal will tend to get out of breath after minimal effort, limp when walking, have less energy or struggle with simple day-to-day activities such as jumping on the couch.

How can I help my pet lose weight?

Once an examination by a veterinarian or technician has revealed a weight problem, a weight-loss plan will be set up. This plan will include goals to achieve, changes to the food (if necessary), daily rations to be given to your cat or dog and food toys to help your pet eat more slowly and spend more energy. Your pet will be monitored by the team at our Hospital to track their weight loss.

What are the risks associated with excess weight in pets?

There are many problems related to excess weight, including a weakened immune system, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, liver disease, heart disease and osteoarthritis.
